Dr. Ganesanathan Geathiswaran, Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Chennai, attended as a Special Guest at the 14th Annual Convocation of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Chennai, held on 16 August 2026. The convocation was presided over by Dr. G. Viswanathan, Founder and Chancellor of VIT, and was attended by Dr. T. Ramasami, Former Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, as the Chief Guest, and Mr. Mohit Jain, Chief Operating Officer (Publishing) and Board Member of Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd., as the Guest of Honour, along with senior officials and faculty members of VIT. Addressing the gathering, the Deputy High Commissioner highlighted the close and longstanding ties between India and Sri Lanka, noting that the two countries, though separated by a narrow stretch of water, are connected by thousands of years of shared history, culture, religion, language, trade and human relationships. He also emphasized the extraordinary depth of cultural and historical connections between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. The ceremony marked an important milestone for 4,518 graduates from undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes, as they received their degrees and embarked on the next chapter of their professional journeys.
